North Ridgeville Shooting Sports Team Frequently Asked Questions

How old does my child need to be to join the team?

Students in grades 8-12 are welcome to join the team. 7th graders are also welcome to join the team once they complete a coach’s evaluation to determine if they are able to participate safely. This is not a shooting ability tryout.

Does my child need to try out for the team?

We do not hold tryouts for the team. Each student is evaluated to make sure that they will be safe at all times. Our coaching staff works with all levels of abilities.

Does my child need to go to North Ridgeville Schools to join the team?

The league allows teams to accept students from schools that do not have their own teams. Our team accepts students from other schools. They are all required to get a cooperation agreement filled out by their school. We have had many students as part of our program from other school districts.

What equipment do we need to participate?

Everyone is required to have either a 12- or 20-gauge shotgun, no guns with external hammers are permitted. Eye and ear protection are mandatory. In addition to that, either a shooting vest or a belt mounted shell pouch is needed. Every member of the team must either complete the league safety program or a hunter education course in order to participate.

What costs are associated with the team?

There is a season fee paid directly to the league, currently $40 per season. Practice targets and ammunition are the responsibility of the student. We have been able to cover the costs of competition targets for several seasons for all members of the team. In addition to that, we are attempting to cover some ammunition costs. Our goal is to assist with as many costs for every member of the team as possible. Total costs vary from student to student based on the level of practice time that is used.

What shooting disciplines does the team participate in?

We encourage all students to shoot trap for the basics. We also have students that shoot skeet and sporting clays. Currently, sporting clays is held at South Cuyahoga Sportsmen's Association in Medina.

Does the team travel for competition?

Our weekly competitions are held at our home club, Sportsmen’s Gun and Reel. We also compete at several locations for the State and National competitions.
