Scholastic Clay Target Program (SCTP) is a youth shotgun shooting program, and is one of the largest competitive shotgun shooting organizations in the US. The organization offers competitive shooting in American Trap, Skeet, Sporting Clays, Doubles Trap and Skeet, and International or Bunker Trap. We formed the Lorain County Youth Trap Team in the summer of 2020 and currently offer Trap, Skeet and Sporting Clays. Anyone grades 5-12 is eligible to join the team, provided you don’t live closer to another team.
We compete in 4 events, all held at Cardinal Center in Marengo, OH (except for the state Sporting Clays which is held at Eagles Nest, located one exit closer than Marengo). These events are the State, Regional, and National tournaments held in May, June and July. We also have competed in the High School Nation shoot as part of the SCTP college nationals, usually held in October. We are fortunate to live so close to the Cardinal Center where all these shoots are held, so travel is minimal. Students from all over the US attend the national tournament, and 2021 had an attendance of about 7000. Our team has been very competitive at these tournaments and we have team awards and individual champions.
Currently all students on the team also shoot with the Ohio State High School Clay Target League (OSHSCTL) North Ridgeville High School team, but this is not required. Membership cost is $25 annually, but students must also be ATA (American Trap Association) and AIM (youth branch of the ATA) members, another $25 annually. If participating in skeet and sporting clays the student should be a member of NSSA/NSCA (the national organizations for skeet and sporting clays). Students provide their own gun, ammunition and target costs. There are additional fees for each of the previously mentioned tournaments (typically $95 dollars each for trap and skeet, $125 for sporting clays, each event consisting of 200 targets).
We practice Sunday and Wednesday afternoons starting in late February or early March, and practice in conjunction with the NRHS Clay Target League team at the Sportsmens Gun & Reel Club in Lorain, OH.
